GROUND

The town of  OVALLESTAN is located within the Sanglakh Valley in the Maidan Wardak Province central afghanistan, traditionally a rural arab tribal area with steep cutting terrain of high elevation, approximately 300 meters total. The punter cuervo Highway in the west runs south to kandahar bridging the Kandak valley. The terrain boasts large rock formations with sand and rock under foot. Temperature reaches below freezing this time of year, especially during hours of darkness. The Ovall river runs east to west through the AO and at its deepest point is 18m deep. During the current time of year the landscape shows reduced nature growth, impacting on concealment. OVALLESTAN contains the National artifact centre of afghanistan(NAC) containing high value artifacts and art work. The area was heavily bombed by the Taliban in 2007 during fierce fighting between 1 Royal irish regiment and 16 Air assault brigade. The village has since been able to make a full recovery and even has a fully functioning school, small hospital.

SITUATION

After the primary withdrawal of ISAFforces from afghanistan, security has been handed back to the afgan national police(ANP), and afgan national army(ANA). Some ISAF forces still remain to train and advise the native authorities. However areas have been lost due to inadequate planning and action from the afgan authorities. Large coordinated attacks by AL-Qaeda militants are becoming more frequent.

Intelligence suggests a large scale attack is planned on the town of OVALLESTAN by islamic extremist fighters. There is a small number of ANP who are lightly armed currently stationed at PB MALAK. Located in the east of OVALLESTAN. Military commanders in the ANA have been informed and have managed to deploy a section of ANA from a local military base. They have also deployed a reaction force from Kabul which is at platoon strength but will take 48 hours by road to reach OVALLESTAN.

OVALLESTAN is particularly vulnerable because of the infrastructure which it contains should the area fall into the hands of the enemy the NAC and its valuable exhibits would be sold on the black market raising capital for islamic extremists. As well as the humanitarian desermation of a thriving community.

INTENTION

It is the intention of 6 Troop to establish forward defensive positions within the town of OVALLESTAN and carry out Close target reconnaissance to bolster intelligence. Utilizing light fortifications and crew served weapons repel any attack preventing the enemy occupation of OVALLESTAN. We will continue to monitor the PASHMAR Valley from OP COTSWOLD and provide offensive counter attacks on any insurgent forces.
